My Name Is Maria de Jesus
Directed by Marcella Ochoa
In 1950’s Texas, an elementary school teacher changes a Mexican-American child’s name from Maria de Jesus to Mary Jessie, and forces her to speak only English in order to fit into a xenophobic society. Thirty years later, Mary Jessie clashes with her young daughter that she has raised to speak only English. Mary Jessie finally realizes the impact Americanization has had not only herself, but on her daughter as well.
